The Cutest Sanrio Characters

The Beginnings

Sanrio is an iconic Japanese brand known for its expansive range of characters. From Hello Kitty to Gudetama, each Sanrio character has its own unique personality and charm. The company began in the 1960s when founder Shintaro Tsuji started producing small but impactful items such as stationery and gift items with cute designs featuring characters like Hello Kitty.

As the years went by, Sanrio’s cast of characters expanded to include many more colorful personalities who have become beloved friends to children around the world. Here, we’ll explore some of the most popular and iconic Sanrio characters in greater detail to gain a better understanding of their backgrounds and personalities.

Hello Kitty

This iconic Japanese character was first created in 1974 and has become the beloved symbol of Sanrio. She is a white bobtail cat with a red bow, and her official birthday is November 1. Known for her cheerful and optimistic personality, she loves music, reading, spending time with family and friends, baking and playing sports like tennis and badminton.

Keroppi

He is an adorable frog who loves to play pranks on his friends. He was first introduced in 1988, and his hobbies include swimming, playing games, telling stories, collecting shells at the beach, listening to music, riding his skateboard, solving puzzles and eating donuts and ice cream.

Pompompurin

This cute golden retriever was born on April 16 in 1996 with a brown beret on his head. His favorite pastimes are drinking milk tea from a mug with two straws, sleeping under the kotatsu (a traditional Japanese table), eating desserts like pudding or custard cake and going on walks with his friends.

My Melody

She’s an adorable bunny from the forests of Mariland who loves to bake cakes with her grandmother every day after school. She wears a bright pink hood over her ears and often carries around an umbrella as it’s always raining in Mariland! Her other hobbies include gardening, skipping rope, singing songs about nature and playing hide & seek with her friends.

Little Twin Stars

Little Twin Stars, also known as Kiki and Lala, are beloved characters from the Sanrio universe, which also brings us Hello Kitty. These celestial siblings were born on December 24 on the Omoiyari Star in the Yume Star-Cloud, where they were encouraged to travel to Earth to learn and share happiness. Kiki, the younger brother, is known for his love of inventing and exploring. Lala, his older sister, enjoys drawing, writing poems and cooking, always hoping to create things that bring joy to others. Together, they embark on various adventures, spreading their message of love and kindness wherever they go.

Gudetama

This lazy egg character was born in 2013, and he loves nothing more than sleeping all day long! He always looks cute when he’s lounging around in bed or taking baths but sometimes can be found doing activities such as painting pictures or going shopping for new clothes, too!

Cinnamoroll

Born in 2002, this super sweet puppy is usually seen floating through the air as if he had wings! He has big round eyes that twinkle with mischief, while his fluffy white fur provides cushiony comfort wherever he goes! Cinnamoroll loves eating sweets, especially cakes made by My Melody, so they often go out together looking for tasty treats to eat!

Badtz-Maru

Unlike other Sanrio characters, Badtz-Maru is not very friendly or cuddly; he’s actually quite sassy! He was created in 1993 as an alternative cool dude for those who want something different from the cute characters Sanrio is known for creating! His hobbies include breakdancing, skateboarding around town on his scooter and eating spicy food like tacos or ramen noodles. Yum!
